Teaching & Learning
At St Thomas Aquinas, we believe that all students are capable of being imaginative, creative and deeply engaged learners.
Our professional staff are committed to the development of the individual child academically, socially and spiritually. All teaching staff are qualified teachers and are employed by the Director of Catholic Education on behalf of the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn and are registered with the Teacher Quality Institute.
At St Thomas Aquinas we believe that students first need to be taught essential knowledge and skills before they are able to be able to effectively inquire. We rely heavily on evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning, including Sweller’s Cognitive Load Theory’ and Rosheshine’s Ten Principals of Instruction. All teaching staff are fully trained in High Impact Teaching Practices and our Classroom Support Assistants are trained in evidence-based and approached to intervention. Once students are competent, independent learners in particular areas, we provide opportunities for inquiry.
