Dear Families,
We hope this newsletter finds you well. There are many staff and students currently unwell in our community with flu and other related chest colds and coughs. We have several cases of Covid in our community and a total of 12 staff absent today for several reasons. As a result, we ask you to be vigilant and again adopt the protocols of keeping sick children at home. We will be sending students who present with symptoms home as needed and we are being vigilant in sanitising the school – including regular handwashing and disinfecting common surfaces.
As we continue to navigate through these challenging times, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the recent celebration of Pentecost Sunday and its significance in our Catholic community.
Pentecost Sunday, often referred to as the birthday of the Church, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and marks the beginning of the spread of the Gospel message. It serves as a reminder of the power of the Holy Spirit and the call to live by the values of Pentecost in our daily lives.
At St. Thomas Aquinas Primary School, we strive to foster a community rooted in these values. The spirit of Pentecost invites us to be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and to embrace the virtues of love, unity, and service. It reminds us of the importance of nurturing a welcoming and inclusive environment where all members of our community feel valued and supported.
During this current enrolment period, we encourage all parents to engage actively in conversations with friends, family, and colleagues about the positive message of St. Thomas Aquinas Primary. By sharing our experiences and highlighting the unique opportunities our school offers, we can inspire others to consider joining our community.
As we move forward, let us continue to embody the spirit of Pentecost by living out its values in our interactions and relationships. Together, we can create a vibrant and thriving Catholic community where our children can grow academically, spiritually, and emotionally.
Warm regards,
Tim ClearyThe spirit of Pentecost greatly influences the values and community at St. Thomas Aquinas Primary School. Pentecost serves as a reminder of the power of the Holy Spirit and calls us to live by its values in our daily lives.
Love: The spirit of Pentecost encourages us to love one another as Christ loves us. At St. Thomas Aquinas Primary School, we strive to create a loving and inclusive community where all members feel valued and supported. We promote a culture of kindness, compassion, and respect, fostering positive relationships among students, staff, and parents.
Unity: Pentecost emphasizes the unity of the Church, and this unity is reflected in our school community. We celebrate our diversity and recognize that we are all part of the same body of Christ. We encourage collaboration, teamwork, and a sense of belonging, where everyone feels included and appreciated for their unique contributions.
Service: The spirit of Pentecost calls us to serve others selflessly. At St. Thomas Aquinas Primary School, we instill in our students the importance of serving their community and making a positive difference in the lives of others. We encourage acts of kindness, volunteerism, and a sense of responsibility to help those in need.
By embracing the values of Pentecost, we aim to create a nurturing and faith-filled environment where students can grow academically, spiritually, and emotionally. The spirit of Pentecost influences our daily interactions, shaping our school culture and guiding our decision-making processes.
As a Catholic community, we are committed to living out these values, fostering a strong sense of community, and preparing our students to become compassionate and responsible members of society.
Together, we strive to embody the spirit of Pentecost and create a vibrant and inclusive community at St. Thomas Aquinas Primary School.

What a fabulous start to the year we have had! It is hard to believe it’s already May. This term we are learning all about the British colonisation of Australia and the impacts this has had on the Indigenous Peoples. It links with our fabulous novel we are studying in English, Uncle Xbox. We are really loving this book!
We have been very excited to learn how the Europeans of the 1600s didn’t have spices like we use regularly in our foods, and boats made 2-year journeys to gather spices. Ms Younger brought in cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, black pepper, cumin and turmeric for us to see and smell. Some of us even tried the cloves – nobody really liked the taste! With lots of explorers out in the ocean looking for new things to trade and new land to colonise, it was Captain Cook who in 1770 claimed Australia for England and a British settlement was established in Sydney Cove in 1788. There have been some great discussions about how the local Indigenous tribes would have felt about these new people claiming their land. We know we will be able to use this new knowledge when we come to reflect during Reconciliation Week.
Our focus in Religious Education has been on learning about the Holy Trinity and how Christians have a unique belief in one God in 3 persons. We have explored imagery for God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, truly 3 in 1 God. We created our own artworks to express this belief and Ms Younger thinks they are good enough for the art gallery!
In Science with Miss Kelly we are learning about forces like contact and non-contact forces. Contact forces are those where you touch or contact something to make it move – like pushing over a drink bottle. Non-contact forces are where you don’t need to touch something to make it move or change like wind and solar power. It’s heaps of fun!
Students are introduced to new Ngunnawal vocabulary weekly. Special thanks to Miss Evans for continuing our learning of our Ngunnawal Country.
Overdues
We have about 400 books overdue at the moment. Please make an effort to return your library books so others can borrow them. Students are able to renew their books if they want to keep them for longer than two weeks.

Tournament of Minds (TOM) - Years 5 & 6 Expressions of Interest
Tournament of Minds (TOM) is open to all Year 5 & 6 students. Please visit the link below to view information on dates and requirements as well as the Expression of Interest From.
A gentle reminder for all our Year 6 families that the current enrolment period ends on 31 May 2024. Please ensure you have lodged your enrolment application for Year 7 2025 prior to the end of the period. You may be required to have supporting documentation with your application and as such we urge you to not leave the application process until the last day.
At St Thomas Aquinas we are continually teaching our students about digital and online safety to help them become knowledgeable digital citizens. Each week we will be posting online safety tips to help parents and families build your knowledge and open discussion with your children at home.
Online spaces should be safe for everyone, but you may sometimes come across content that is distressing – especially if it shows extreme violence or acts of terrorism.
Inappropriate content may be an image, video or written words that can be upsetting, disturbing or offensive. Young people may encounter inappropriate content accidentally or deliberately. It is normal to be curious, but young people may be faced with concepts they are not ready for developmentally.
Inappropriate content may include:
- sexually explicit material
- false or misleading information
- violence
- extremism or terrorism
- hateful or offensive material.
The exposure of young people to inappropriate content is difficult to measure because many instances go unreported. A child may come across inappropriate content and not tell anyone due to embarrassment, confusion or fear. Given this, the percentage of young people encountering inappropriate or hateful content online could be higher than stated.
Prevent and manage exposure to inappropriate content
From Early Years to Year 2 students should build skills in:
- identifying online behaviours that make them feel safe and unsafe
- identifying and describing emotional responses people may experience in different online situations
- removing themselves from unsafe online situations if they come across inappropriate content
- describing strategies to help them search for safe, reliable information on safe search engines and websites.
Between Years 3 to 6, students should:
- develop an awareness of situations that might increase their exposure to inappropriate content online
- examine primary and secondary online sources to determine origin, purpose and reliability, and describe and apply strategies that can be used to reduce and manage exposure to harmful content
- question what they encounter online and begin to think critically about issues including body image, gender identity, racism, fake news and democracy
- investigate support services such as eSafety and Kids Helpline
- consider ways to setup their devices and apps to minimise accidental exposure to inappropriate content, for example, using screen time tools
Reporting to eSafety
Australian residents can make a complaint to eSafety about illegal and restricted online content. This includes child sexual abuse material and abhorrent violent material showing terrorist acts, murder, attempted murder, rape, kidnapping or torture.
Religious Education at St Thomas Aquinas
In Kindergarten this term we are looking at the bible as a source of stories about God’s relationship with people over time. We are particularly learning about the Creation Story and Abraham and Sarah. We love learning the stories from both the Old and New Testaments and would love to look at some with our families at home!
Religious Life at St Thomas Aquinas
Pentecost
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8
You might have noticed our prayer focus at the front of the school has turned red. This is to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost that was on Sunday. We remember the Holy Spirit came to the disciples at Pentecost and gave them gifts to help them spread the Word of God. We pray that the Holy Spirit similarly gifts us to share the message of God’s love.
Reconciliation Week Whole School Prayer
3 Blue are very excited to be leading the whole school in prayer this Friday, celebrating Reconciliation Week. Families and friends are warmly invited to join us in the Hall at 9:30am.
Parish Life - Sacramental Programs
Confirmation - Formation Session for Parents and children.
Thursday 23 May—6:00pm—Parish Church
This Thursday we have our second Formation session for the candidates preparing for Confirmation next month. Families are asked to have completed the first and second parts of the preparation guide and bring the book along to the session so we can explore part 3 together. Please bring something to write with as well.
Please note sponsors are encouraged to attend the formation sessions but if they are not available a parent is all that is required to accompany the candidates. Formation sessions are an essential element of the preparation program and are where you will be provided with the preparation booklet, presentation mass prayer cards and other support materials as well as engaging in the formation activities each session.
Confirmation Retreat
All of Year 6 will participate in a retreat learning about the sacrament of Confirmation and the important role the Holy Spirit plays in the lives of believers. Empower Girls With Our Selfie-Esteem Program
Empower Girls With Our Selfie-Esteem Program
Facilitated by Madeleine West
Social media's influence is as pervasive as it is profound, the impact on young girls’ self-esteem is a growing concern that demands immediate and focused attention. The relentless comparison to unrealistic beauty standards, the distorted metrics of success, and the often toxic culture of body shaming can significantly impair their mental health and well-being. It is against this backdrop that initiatives aimed at empowering young girls to navigate the online interactions become not just relevant, but necessary.
Recent events, such as those at a Victorian school where boys objectified young girls influenced by misogynistic influencers ,warped social media beauty standards, serve as a chilling reminder of the urgent need for proactive measures. This objectification, underpinned by social media, and as we head into a world steeped in AI Generated filters spills over into the real world, manifesting in male violence towards women and other harmful behaviours. These incidents underscore a broader societal issue where online interactions influence real-life attitudes and actions, emphasising the need for a cultural shift towards healthier online habits and interactions.
Empowering and Uplifting Young Girls
Building resilience and self-worth in young girls is essential to counter the negative influences of social media. This begins with fostering an environment that encourages open dialogue, allowing girls to express their concerns without fear of judgment. It is vital to shift the focus from physical appearance to celebrating personal strengths and achievements. Implementing affirmations, positive reinforcement, and exposing young girls to role models who exemplify success through intelligence, kindness, and talent can significantly bolster self-esteem. Engaging them in activities that promote teamwork and skill development helps to reinforce their capabilities and inherent value.
The Transformative Journey with Madeleine West
Facilitated by Madeleine West mother of six, known for her relentless child safety and environmental advocacy as well as roles on stage and screen, the "Selfie Esteem" program offers a profound journey into self-discovery tailored for young girls and those identifying as female.
Madeleine's diverse experiences, both professional and personal, provide her with a unique ability to connect with young women, guiding them through the complexities of online interactions and self-perception.
Program Overview
The "Selfie Esteem" program is a comprehensive 90min session designed to tackle various aspects critical to developing a healthy relationship with social media and fostering a robust self-image:
Building Selfie-Esteem and Confidence
Participants engage in self-discovery, where Madeleine helps boost their self-esteem and confidence, crucial for navigating both personal and online spaces.
- Healthy Relationships with the Online World
Strategies are shared to create positive online interactions, ensuring enriching and safe digital experiences.
- Resilience and Handling Online Stress
The program covers effective coping mechanisms for managing online stress and cyberbullying, essential for maintaining mental well-being.
- Boundaries, Consent, and Selfie Love
This module focuses on asserting personal boundaries, understanding consent, and promoting self-love, empowering girls to value themselves beyond their digital personas.
- Empowerment Now and Into the Future
Encouraging proactive steps towards personal aspirations, this session empowers participants to leverage their strengths in all facets of life.
- Being Your Best Online and In Real Life (IRL)
Bridging online personas with real-life identities, the session stresses consistency in values and ethics across all platforms.
- Emotional Intelligence and Online Leadership Skills
Covering trust-building, vulnerability, and assertiveness, this part of the program nurtures leadership qualities, setting a positive example for peers online.
Why This Matters
The necessity of such programs is highlighted by the growing number of mental health and violence issues linked to social media use and low self-esteem. By empowering young girls with the tools to navigate their online presence confidently, understand privacy settings, recognise signs of cyberbullying, and engage critically with content, we foster not just safer online environments but also healthier mindsets.
