Dear Families,
As the number of children requiring supervision at school grows, it is important that anyone requiring supervision for their child completes the supervision survey by the Friday of the previous week: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/STA_Week3.
During the next few weeks as the ACT transitions out of lockdown and back to face-to-face learning, teachers on supervision duty will be required to be on the floor a lot more and so may only be able to make their class check-in and might not be available for additional support during the day. Teachers will continue to post pre-recorded lessons and to check student’s work. As you can appreciate, like so many people at the moment, the teacher’s workload has increased enormously and I want to acknowledge and thank them for all they are doing to support every student at St Thomas Aquinas. I also want to thank so many of our parents and carers who have sent thank you messages, morning teas, chocolates and even bottles of wine! While the gifts are not necessary, we all appreciate the thoughtfulness and are grateful to be part of such a supportive community.
Musical
Sadly, we will be unable to have our Musical performance this year. We had hoped that this would be able to go ahead at school, however, the extension to remote learning and health guidance around keeping student groups separated has meant that this is no longer possible. I know many of our students, particularly our Year 6 students, will be very disappointed to hear this news.
Class Allocations for 2022
During this term, we will be finalising our staffing arrangements for 2022. Below is a copy of the ‘Class Allocation Policy’ which aims to ensure there is a fair and just process in allocating students to classes for the upcoming school year.
My firm belief is that teachers are in the best position to decide a child’s placement because they know all the children in their classes and have a view of the ‘big picture’. In view of this, we will not be distributing Friendship Request Forms. Friendship considersations will be made by classroom teachers in conjunction with their class. However, I invite parents to inform me of anything that you feel needs to be considered, for your own child’s well-being or development.
When forming the class lists the following factors are taken into consideration:
- Gender
- Diverse Learners
- Work Habits
- Cognitive Ability
- Friendships
- Behaviour
- Health Considerations
- Religion (to assist in achieving balance between classes, especially in Sacramental years) and
- Common names
Ideally we aim for an equal spread of both positive and challenging characteristics. Where practical, parental requests based on educational concerns may be considered. At St Thomas Aquinas, we follow these principles and guidelines when considering placement of students each year:
- Every care will be taken to ensure that each child is placed in the best situation to enhance learning and social development.
- Parents who wish to raise particular concerns regarding the placement of their children in particular classes for the following year, should put the concern in writing and email it to me ( Leah.Taylor@cg.catholic.edu.au ) by Friday, 29 October 2021 - Week 4. Parents cannot assume that requests from previous years will be taken into account. A new request will need to be made every year.
- Parent concerns will be considered during the process. It must be clearly understood, however, that no definite guarantees can be given regarding parental concerns.
- Where appropriate, advice will be sought from the Classroom Support Teacher, School Counsellor, Chaplain and current class teacher during this process.
- Considering all the factors listed above, the current class teachers compile class lists from mid-term, Term 4. These are then handed to me for confirmation.
- Children will be informed of their class placement for the following school year in December (usually the last week of school) and the opportunity will be provided for them to spend some time with their new class teacher. New students to the school for the following year are also invited to attend.
- Throughout this process, after appropriate consultation, I reserve the right to make final professional decisions regarding the placement of children.
Take care and God Bless
Supervision Survey - Term 4 - Week 3
We will continue to offer supervision for the children of parents and carers who are essential workers, working outside of the home, and for vulnerable children. Knowing that over the coming weeks, many will be required to return to work and that rosters change, we are asking families to complete the supervision survey each week. If you have already completed the survey we only need to know the names of your children and the day’s they require supervision. This survey helps us to ensure we have enough supervision each day.

Compass Parent Portal (CPP) has Arrived!!!
The Compass Parent Portal has arrived and parts of Schoolzine/SZapp will be turned off. The CPP is an essential online portal that allows you to interact with your child’s school and access up-to-date information.
Please note that our school will not be using SMS and Compass PAY as we already have other payment options available for the payment of school fees, camps etc. These options include EFTPOS, BPAY, Qkr and Direct Debits.
You should have received your log-in credentials via email and you will be able to log into the Parent Portal through the Compass App (Android & IOS0 or Desktop). If you have not received your Compass log-in details, please contact the Front Office. Only one email per parent/carer is used in Compass. If you wish to change the email address used by Compass, please change your preferred email address via the Compass Portal or send an email to office.staquinas@cg.catholic.ed.au.
Please note that the Phone App has less functions than the Desktop App. To search for our school, please search for WEST BELCONNEN, not the School as there are many St Thomas Aquinas schools around Australia. If installing Compass on your phone, please scroll down when searching the school via the suburb to locate our school.
Below are some quick links for parents:
- Information Sheet for Parents
- Visual Guide for Parents
- Downloading the App

- Attendance Notes
Further information is available on our Website. See link below:
We have received our school photos. They will be distributed to our students when they return to school in Week 4 on 1 November 2021.

Lowes School Wear Sale and Stock Notification
With sporadic lockdowns and the school closures, we will all no doubt be grateful for a return to normality.
While restrictions have been imposed, we have all been working from home in preparation for what may continue to be an unsettled period. We are committed to providing the best possible service to you and the community throughout.
With the pandemic’s more sinister variant sweeping across the globe, we are encountering major disruption in the three countries the uniforms are manufactured. Snap closure of factories without notice pushes the timeline out, resulting in lengthy delays in shipping and delivery. Lowes did anticipate some degree of interruption and consequently orders were forced through earlier this year to accommodate delays. While this will to a greater extent provide continuity of supply for most items, delivery will be impacted.
We have listed the garments below that we feel may experience out of stocks between shipments.
SHORT SLEEVE NAVY/SKY PE POLO WITH EMBROIDERY
SHORT SLEEVE POWDER BLUE POLO
We will continue to keep you informed of any known delays and potential out of stocks.
Always assuring you of our best attention.

MASS TO RESUME 16-17 OCTOBER 2021
Mass for a limited number of 25 people will begin on the weekend of the 16-17 October and in order to facilitate as many parishioners as possible getting to Mass I propose the following:
- Please indicate by email if you wish to be registered to come to mass charnwood@cg.org.au.
- Could you please also advise people who are not on computers, but who attend Mass regularly, that this is open and they need to register by phoning the office during office hours on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday?
I will, for the few weekends where numbers are limited to 25, have extra masses on Saturday afternoon and evening and on Sunday morning. We will allocate a Mass to those who are registered, unfortunately we will be only able to accommodate those who register.
The proposed Mass times are:
Saturday: 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Sunday: 8:00 am, 9:00 am and 10:00 am
As stated you will be allocated a Mass time and I have no way of changing the time if it is not suitable, it is up to you if you wish to avail yourself of the opportunity.
Can I ask that if you are at your registered Mass and you are a reader that you nominate yourself to do the reading for that Mass? As there will only be 25 at Mass there is no need for an extra-ordinary minister of the Eucharist. There will be no music for any Masses just yet.
If you know of people who are unable to come to Mass, but who wish to receive communion at home, please nominate yourself to take communion to them.
It will be nice to have you back to celebrate Mass with, I have certainly missed you! Weekday Masses will also be capped at 25 so you will be asked, on the weekend of Mass starting, to register for weekday Mass.
